Fats are a type of nutrient that you get from your diet. It is essential to eat some fats, though it is also harmful to eat too many.
The fats you eat give your body energy that it needs to work properly. During exercise, your body uses calories from carbohydrates you have eaten. But after 20 minutes, exercise then depends on calories from fat to keep you going.
Trans fatty acids are unhealthy fats that form when vegetable oil hardens in a process called hydrogenation. Hydrogenated fats, or “trans fats,” are often used to keep some foods fresh for a long time.
According to a study from the University of Maryland Medical Center, trans fat can lead to a higher risk of heart disease than saturated fats, will raise total cholesterol levels, and deplete good cholesterol (HDL).
The university also concluded that trans fats are even more dangerous than saturated fats, which are found in butter, cheese, and beef for example.
High consumption of trans fats can lead to clogged arteries, similar to how bacon grease hardens after it is left out. This clogging of the arteries caused by trans fats can lead to heart attack or stroke.
Moral of the story, if you’re a baseball player trying to maintain healthy nutrition and body weight, you must avoid foods that have trans fats in the ingredients.
Foods containing trans fats are much more prevalent than you might imagine. It is important to read nutrition labels on foods. This will help you know what kinds of fats, and how much, your food contains.
